Exposure to the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) during pregnancy may cause children to experience breathing concerns in their first four years, according to a study recently published in JAMA Pediatrics. [1] The longitudinal study looked at the exposure to BPA in 398 mother-infant pairs. Researchers determined each mother’s level of exposure to BPA by measuring the concentration of BPA urine levels at 16 weeks and 26 weeks. (more…)

Side effects are possible for any food, supplement, or medication, and everyone reacts differently to different products. Vitamin C, for example, may promote loosening of the bowels if taken in excess, and too much niacin (B3) may cause a disagreeable flushing. Experiencing unpleasant side effects of a supplement is by no means enjoyable, and it’s best for consumers to do their research before diving into any supplement approach. Generally, the worst side effects for vitamins – including B vitamins – are diarrhea, nausea, rashes, and vomiting. [1] (more…)

Vitamin B12 is a lot like a key, opening up doorways that lead to an array of metabolic, cellular processes. Like a key, vitamin B12 is unique among all other vitamins in both structure and function. Plants, animals, and fungi do not create it, unlike most dietary nutrients. While bacteria in the gut can create B12, the production is inadequate. Without this important nutrient, cellular function would cease, and our energy would plummet. Considering that B12 contributes to the production of ATP — the molecule that provides energy to every […]

Feeling tired now and then is normal and natural. It may just mean you need more sleep, and getting a full night’s rest may relieve any fatigue you're feeling. A chronic state of fatigue, however, represents a much bigger issue. Since energy is a cellular function that depends on the vitamins and minerals you consume each day, consistent low energy levels often indicate an imbalance in nutrients. (more…)

When it comes to health, there are some powerful molecules that remain relatively unknown by the general population. Alpha-lipoic acid is just one of these important molecules, acting as an antioxidant and playing an integral role in cellular energy metabolism. There are two forms of alpha-lipoic acid: r-lipoic acid and s-lipoic acid. R-lipoic acid is the biologically-active form the human body prefers. The Na refers to the sodium salt that stabilizes the R-lipoic acid. The sodium makes it less likely to bind, keeping each molecule separate and more readily available […]
