Importance of Self-Care | How You Can Be Happier Today

Length: 7 minutes

Did you know that 85 percent of the world's population is affected by low self-esteem? And the past year, 74 percent of people have felt so stressed they've been overwhelmed or unable to cope. Only one in three Americans say they're very happy. And less than 3 percent of Americans live a healthy lifestyle.

These are unbelievable statistics.

People are struggling and struggling out there, and it's actually very depressing to see our world heading in this direction.

My Story

Everybody that I know has gone through some period in their life where they've suffered, where they've felt down, where they've felt depressed, where they've felt stressed, where they've looked in the mirror and they've been unhappy with themselves, they've lost self-confidence, they've lost self-esteem.

It happened to me. I lost my dad at an early age, and I lost my mom to cancer.

When I lost my mom, I fell into a deep depression. I had hardly any family left. I started gaining weight, I was depressed, and I thought it was the end of the world. And it's hard. I know how hard it is because I went through it.

Back then, it was before I had really transformed into this healthy lifestyle, but I think that that experience that I went through helped me tremendously to become the person that I am today because I didn't give up.

During this period, I weighed 217 pounds, and I did feel low self-esteem and depressed.

I had hardly any family left, I didn't know what to do, but I didn't give up, and that is what self-care is all about. Taking the next step, realizing that you want to become somebody else, you want to get better, and I did that.

I ended up losing all the weight, getting healthy, learning as much as I can, reading as many books as I can, and changing my life.

And this story goes on and on, and I'm still continually changing and becoming a better person and focusing a lot of my time on how I can become healthier and happier.

Why do you need to put yourself first? What's the solution?

What’s Causing Your Unhappiness?

Well, I realized that when I was eating bad, that was causing me to even feel more depressed.

My team and I have spent the last 20 years looking at the root cause of not only depression and unhealthiness but obesity and diabetes, and all of these other conditions, which by the way, lead to a low self-worth.

We all struggle with these emotional constraints. We have relationship situations going on, we have things going on in our own lives, and sometimes we don't feel good enough or loved sometimes.

These things can happen on a regular basis or from time to time, so we need to address and take the necessary steps to utilize self-care, which starts from within.

How to Practice Self Care

You have to take those steps yourself, or you just continue to go down instead of up.

And one of the most important things that I've seen transform people is detoxification and cleansing of their body and their home. There's so many conditions — health mental conditions — that are associated with a toxic body. Once you start cleansing and detoxifying, cleansing and healing the gut, then you start having more production of serotonin, melatonin, neurotransmitters and you start to become happier.

Once you start cleansing the liver, which is the seed of all emotions according to traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic, you start pushing all those deep-seated emotions out of your body.

You stop looking at yourself as a victim and start taking the necessary steps to progress your life in a positive direction. You start finding things that create happiness in your life.

By the way, what are those things in your life that make you happy? What are those things in your life that you like to do for fun?

Most people cannot answer those two simple questions.

What are you doing to give yourself a break from stress? What is your solution from stress?

Mine is deep breathing exercises, meditation, and watching funny videos.

When do you allow yourself time to reflect and improve? How much time are you spending on yourself to become a better communicator; to become a better mom; to become a better son, father, friend?

What are you doing to become more satisfied with your health? When is the last time you looked in the mirror and told yourself, "I love you?"

I ask people, when is the last time in your life that you had self-confidence, that you just looked in the mirror and you were like, "Wow, I am awesome! I look amazing, I feel amazing, I have an awesome life!"

And you know what they tell me?

They tell me, "Oh, that was probably when I was around 16 years old, when I was in high school." What happened?

I mean, we only have a certain amount of time to live this life, every day is a new day, and once a day is gone, it's gone forever. Time is the most valuable thing that you have on your side when you talk about self-care or how you can become a better, happier, healthier person.

So one of the things I like to ask is what makes you proud to be you? I ask myself this question.

I mean, are you proud to be a thinker? Are you proud of the way that you're raising a family? Are you proud that you're a very creative person? Are you proud that you like to help people, that you like to donate your time?

What are those internal things that you're really proud of, that you can look in the mirror every day and just say, you know what, I'm proud to be the person that I am today, and I'm grateful and I'm thankful for the person I am today?

That’s the best way to start practicing self-care. You want to make sure you’re healing yourself mentally and emotionally from within, and you’ll start to see the changes in your life, relationships, and mental health.
