Hundreds of thousands of people are hospitalized each year due to food contamination, and up to 3,000 food-related fatalities occur annually in the United States. Now, changes are being considered to the FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act, or FSMA, in an effort to reduce food borne illness. Like most political initiatives, it sounds like a great idea on paper. However, because of fee increases, it's causing serious debate. Small, local, and organic farms run the risk of being run out of business due to these irrational, sometimes hidden, fees. This reduces availability to nutritious, local food and allows Big Agriculture to take over the food supply.
Join us and urge the FDA to change the proposed rules. Signing your name to this petition can mean the difference between having sustainable, family-owned farms and not having them. Support your favorite family farm by stepping up and getting involved, now!
